When gothic dreams became contemporary nightmares: The horror films of the 1970s
For decades the horror film had been confined to the dusty gothic dreamscapes of Frankenstein, Dracula and Edgar Allan Poe adaptations. Then, with the loosened restrictions of the late 1960s the American horror film emerged to confront the present. Whether you lived in big cities, midwestern suburbs or small-town nowhere you were not safe from demonic children, chainsaw wielding madmen, mask-wearing psychos and marauding mother-nature. Even the local shopping mall may be crawling with flesh craving zombies.
Added to that was the imported horror of burning wicker men from Britain and gut churning Italian jungle cannibal adventures.
Join Dr. Dean Brandum for a journey back to horror’s greatest decade, when the genre reflected the neuroses of a troubled time. Strictly for attendees 18 and over, this presentation will include a visual display of original horror posters of the period (plus before and beyond).
